The town is named for Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort, who became one of Carolina's Lords Proprietor around 1709.  The town arms show the arms of Henry Somerset [[File:dukebeaufort.jpg|100 px]], but the two lower quarters have been replaced by roses and fish.
