Origin/meaning

Salerno was founded in 194 BC. It was a relatively unimportant city until the 17th century. The arms show in the upper part St. Matthew, the patron saint, whose bones were brought to Salerno in 954. The lower part is taken from the arms of Naples-Sicily.
