Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1979.

The ship refers to the harbour and the importance of shipping and fishing for the municipality. The chief shows the symbol for iron and refers to the (former) iron works in the area. The three symbols refer to the three municipalities that merged in 1974.

The previous arms were granted on February 19, 1960.

These arms are based on the seal of the city, known from 1607. The fish and the net refer to the importance of fishing for the city.
