"Van zilver beladen met een hinde, loopende op een terras van groen. Het schild gedekt met een goude kroon."

NB : de hinde is van keel, de kroon heeft 3 bladeren en 2 parels.

Oorsprong/verklaring :
Waarschijnlijk sprekend bedoeld, al had de hinde vroeger wel horens.

De hinde is als symbool van Hindeloopen bekend sinds 1355. Aan een oorkonde uit dat jaar hangt en zegel met daarop een soort hert. Dit zegel is in gebruik geweest tot 1555. Een ander zehel, met afdruk uit 1496, vertoont een liggende hinde in eeen omheining. Een volgend zegel, bekend uit de 15e eeuw, vertoont een lopende hinde tussen bomen, met aan de takken bolletjes. Wanneer de hinde in het stadswapen is gekomen is niet bekend.

De gemeente voerde het wapen op het briefpapier en andere bescheiden.
