Oorsprong/verklaring :
Gorssel vroeg in 1853 een wapen aan, aangezien volgens een nieuwe wet het wapen op de burgemeestersketting moest worden geplaatst.

Voorgesteld werd een wapen van goud met een witte burcht. Deze burcht stelde het in 1340 als wachthuis gebouwde kasteeltje voor op de weg naar Deventer. De naam Gorssel zou afgeleid zijn van Coerslo, ofwel plaats waar een koer- of wachthuis stond.

De Hoge Raad van Adel ging met het ontwerp akkoord, alleen werd de burcht weergegeven in blauw, aangezien zilver op goud onmogelijk is.

Historisch klopt de naam Coerslo echter niet. Al in 1253 wordt de plaats Gerstlo genoemd. Later verschijnen er nog zo'n 10 verschillende versies, maar nergens Coerslo. De wachttoren heeft wel bestaan en is in 1864 of daaromtrent afgebroken.
