CIVIC HERALDRY E-BOOKS.

On this page I offer several heraldic books in electronic format on CD. I do not offer free downloads.

All books can be ordered on ready-made or custom-made CDs, for a specific charge per book, depending on the size and scarcety of the book. All books are in pdf format.

Austria

Das Wappen der Stadt Wien, seine Entstehung und Geschichte

(The history of the arms of the city of Vienna)

This is a very rare booklet from 1866, that describes the history of the arms of Vienna, followed by black and white images of the arms and seals of the city. The book has 20 pages of text and 2 with images. The author was Alfred Genser and the booklet was printed in only 200 numbered copies. This is number 36. Due to this age and the two world wars, this book is very rare.

Städtewappen von Österreich-Ungarn by Hugo Ströhl

(Austrian-Hungarian city arms)

Second edition, issued in 1904 and printed by Anton Schroll & Co in Wien. The first edition was from 1885 by Karl Lind.
This books provides 722 full colour arms of the cities in the large Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The first part of the book consists of 42 full colour plates, followed by 100 pages of background information on the town arms. The second part also includes over 100 additional towns with black-and white images. The towns are listed under their German names for most parts of the Empire, but under the Hungarian names in the Hungary section of the book. In many cases other official names are mentioned as well.

The files on the CD are based on the territories and combine the colour images of a territory with the descriptions of the arms.

Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Wappenrolle by Hugo Ströhl

(Austrian arms)

First edition, issued in 1890 and printed by Anton Schroll & Co in Wien.
This first edition shows the arms of the territories named in the Grand Title of the Emperor Franz Joseph I. The book contains two sections; the historical descriptions and background of the arms (20 pages), followed by 12 pages of full colour pictures.

Wappenbuch der Städte und Märkte der gefürsteten Grafschaft Tirol

(Roll of arms of the cities and towns in Tirol)

This small but beautiful book was published in 1894. The book gives a short introduction, followed by a historical overview of the arms of towns and cities in Tirol. This is followed by beautifully coloured images of 48 town arms, two on each page. Half of the towns are now part of Italy, the other of Austria.

This book is extremely rare and only few copies are found in libraries.

Germany

 

Deutsche Städtewappen; Wappen von 312 der bedeutesten Städte des Deutschen Reichs.

(Arms of the 312 most important German Cities)

This book was published between 1886 and 1900 by Heinrich Keller Verlag in Frankfurt am Main. This book is the 4th edition, but no date or author is given. The book was publised with two large pages, which were folded in 5 parts, each showing a series of arms in alphabetical order.

There are no additional texts or explanations, only a general preface.

The date of issue is unknown. From the images and cities included it can be concluded that the book was published between 1886 and 1900. It contains the arms of Ludwigshafen prior to 1900 and the arms of Sankt Ingbert, which were granted in 1886.

The eBook contains the whole book with all 312 arms as pdf files in high resolution.

"Deutsche Städtewappen" in hochfeiner farbiger Ausführung mit Gold und Silber.

(German city arms in high quality printing with gold and silver)

This is not actually a book, but a loose collection of arms. The 315 different arms were issued in large sheets and were publised as small sheets of 9 arms each.

There is no additional texts or explanations.

The date of issue or publisher are unknown. From the images and cities included it can be concluded that the book was published between 1900 and 1914. Most likely before 1905. It contains the arms of Ludwigshafen granted in 1900 and the arms of (Bad) Kanstatt, which was incorporated into Stuttgart in 1905.

The eBook contains the complete 35 sheets of 9 arms each as well as an index. Files as pdf files in high resolution

Die Siegel und Wappen der Gemeinden des Kreises Gross-Gerau.

(The seals and arms of the municipalities in the Gross-Gerau District)

This book was published in 1929. It is not really a proper book, but a collection of large-sized full colour prints of the arms of the towns and cities in the German district of Gross-Gerau. There are also 5 large prints of the historical seals, as well as a booklet describing all the arms in detail, including historical notes.

It is a very beautiful and rare book, written by W. H. Diehl and published by the district itself.

This book was published in 1933 and describes the arms of the cities and provinces of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). The author is D. Rühl and it was published by Vorkink Publishers, Bandoeng.

The book has 68 pages and a separate small poster with the arms. All arms are in black-and-white and described in detail, including legends and other background information.

South Africa

Les armoiries de la République Sud-Africaine

(The coat of arms of the South African Republic, Transvaal)

A very rare small book published in Paris on the background of the coat of arms of Transvaal. It describes the background with a lot of (patriottic) history. Only two black and white images.

It was published in 1903 by Joseph Joubert. The booklet is made of quite thin paper and therefore only few copies still exist.

This is rare Swedish book describing the arms of the Kingdom of Sweden, the (historical) provinces as well as the coats of arms of cities.

Issued in 1878 by F. Liljeblad who also made the coloured images. Many of the images are quite wrong, making this a very interesting book.

Switzerland

 

Armorial des Communes Vaudoises

(Arms of the municipalities in the Canton Vaud.)

This beautiful book on the coats of arms of the municipalities in the Canton Vaud in Switzerland was issued in 1922 by the Heraldry Commission of the Canton. The images are made by T. Cornaz, the text by F.Th. Dubois. The front shows the cantonal arms as well as two other arms. The back of the book shows some advertising.

The book is issued unbound in a cardboard cover. The texts were published separately, followed by 97 numbered sheets with 4 beautifully designed arms each.

Armorial des communes Genevoises.

(Arms of the municipalities in the Canton Geneva.)

This beautiful and quite rare book on the coats of arms of the municipalities in the Canton Geneva in Switzerland was issued in 1925 by the Cantonal Archives. The author is A. de Montfalcon.

The book is issued as 530 numbered copies. This is number 372.

The book shows beautifully drawn coats of arms as well as background information. Total 39 pages.
