    " Van lazuur met een gealiseerd kruis op welks regter arm een halve arend, alles van goud."

    NB : niet beschreven is een gouden kroon met 5 parels.

    De betekenis is erg onduidelijk, er wordt wel vermoed dat de adelaar een Friese adelaar is en als verbetering van het wapen werd in 1970 een ontwerp gemaakt met rechts een uitkomende Friese adelaar en links een kruis. Dit is echter nooit doorgegaan. Het kruis is waarschijnlijk het kruis van het Sticht Utrecht.

    Van den Bergh noemt een 15e eeuws zegel, waarop een Gothische nis met 2 vleugels, waarin een staande bisschop van voren, in de rechterhand. Volgens Den Uyl dateert dit zegel overigens al uit 1383.

    English summary :
    The origin of the arms is not clear. Neither is known when the arms were first used. The oldest seal of the city dates from 1383 and shows the Bishop of Utrecht in a Gothic portal.
    It has been stated that the eagle is a Frisian eagle (many noble Frisian families used an eagle). The cross is most likely the cross of the diocese of Utrecht.
