Oorsprong/verklaring : Volgens de aanvraag van het wapen op 3 oktober 1815 kwam het wapen al voor op zeer oude gerechtelijke afgiften. Volgens de burgemeester, die overigens geen afbeelding meestuurde, stond op het wapen een lindeboom. De oudste afbeelding van een boomwapen dateert uit 1795. De gedachte dat het een vrijheidsboom voorstelt is niet erg waarschijnlijk, aangezien dat meestal dorre bomen zijn. Volgens de volksoverlevering is het wapen ontleend aan een oude lindeboom bij de begraafplaats, die een rol speelde bij de plaatselijke rechtspraak.
